The UNESCO Chair on Prevention and Sustainable Management of Geo-hydrological Hazards of the University of Florence organized a scientific mission to Khuzestan Province, Islamic Republic of Iran, on 11-16 April 2019, under the overall co-ordination of the Director and Representative of UNESCO Teheran Cluster Office and the direct supervision of the Responsible Person for the Culture Unit of UNESCO Teheran Cluster Office and the Deputy for Cultural Heritage at the Iranian Cultural Heritage Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO).
The main purpose of the mission was to give consultancy and technical advice for stabilization of Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System World Heritage Site, which is currently affected by ongoing erosion and instability processes.
During the field trip, it was also possible to visit other cultural heritage sites in the same Province, affected by the recent heavy rainstorms (from mid-March 2019).
A number of meetings were conducted with authorities of the Iranian Cultural Heritage Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO) at both central and provincial levels for briefing/debriefing of the project.
Prof. Giovanni Gigli was the UNESCO Chair ambassador for this scientific mission.
