The Sixth World Landslide Forum

The UNESCO Chair, together with the International Consortium on Landslides (ICL), co-organised the 6th World Landslide Forum (WLF6), which took place in Florence from 14 to 17 November 2023. The Forum was organised within the International Programme on Landslides (IPL) and supported by five United Nations organisations (UNESCO, WMO, FAO, UNDRR, UNU) and four international scientific organisations (ISC, WFEO, IUGS and IUGG).

Entitled “Landslide Science for Sustainable Development”, WLF6 contributed to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction through the Kyoto Landslide Commitment 2020 for the global promotion of understanding and reducing landslide disaster risk. At the opening of the Forum the 2023 Florence Declaration on Landslide Risk Reduction was adopted.

The aim of the Forum was to create a common platform to promote cooperation between scientists, technicians, experts and policy makers concerned with landslides, in order to define common priority actions for risk reduction on a global scale. Participants from the global community of landslide research discussed all the main aspects of the subject: landslide monitoring and early warning, landslide modelling, hazard and risk assessment, risk mitigation techniques, triggering mechanisms and the relationships with climate change.

The Chair also took part in the organisation of the 5th World Landslide Forum (WLF5), held in Kyoto from 2 to 6 November 2021, and of the 4th World Landslide Forum (WLF4), held in Ljubljana from 29 May to 2 June 2017.
